Update: Season 2020 Hoodie and Beanie

We're back!!! Paddington Colts training today

First of all, I wanted to thank you all for your patience while the club has been working out how to meet the guidelines required to get our season back up and running. The good news is that we have the green light to resume training this week, and playing after the 19th of June.

Although we need to make some changes to our normal training routines, we will get through this, as we always do as an aligned family club that sticks together through thick and thin, always putting the enjoyment and safety of all our members and families first.

Training resumes this FRIDAY, 3 July between 4.30 pm and 7.30 pm at Woollahra Oval 2 & 3.

Yes, quite a change and apologies as I know this might be a bit out of the way for most families’ budget restrictions. Grounds availability has hampered our effort.

Being school holidays, I realise some of our players might be out of town, so please don't stress, but if you can make it please do so. Don’t forget to contact your team on Whatsapp. We're looking into alternative days and locations for training down the track more likely next season.

For this season, training will be at Woollahra at this time and place. Finally we have a place to call home. We also realise some players in some age groups will be playing rugby on Friday nights in a few week's time, but don't worry, we'll sort something out.

A big thanks to all those coaches, trainers, parents, and Colts who have contributed to get us back on the training and playing field.

A special thanks to Chairmen Bob Tate and Garry Hardaker, Life members who have been at the coalface of every detail to get us back on the field. Cleared and Registered.

Even when the canary died, Bob and Garry continued to dig to get us and keep us going.

COVID-19 Safety Training Protocol

Now with training, we need to follow a few simple protocols for everyone's safety and to restrict gatherings to under 20. These include:

1. Obviously, if your son has a cold or any symptoms, please do not bring him to training.
2. Please try to arrive close to 4.30 pm, our training start time and be there at 5.30 pm for pick up.
3. At drop off, please park in the car park and walk your son to the fence at the beginning of the playing fields.
4. Players must sanitise their hands before they can approach the team and join the training. Sanitser will be available at the ground, plus I will have some just for our team. I will also have our footballs sanitised.
5. All coaches, trainers, and attending players' names will be taken down on an attendance register. If a parent enters the playing fields, they must also register their name.
6. Social distancing will be observed as best as possible. Our focus on the first sessions will be fitness, fun and skills, with minimal contact.
7. At the end of the training, all players, coaches, trainers must again sanitise their hands.
8. Once players spot their parent/s, they are to leave immediately.

If we do what we can and follow the rules, the mighty Colts can get back to what they do best and display to the world, in their own unique way, why they call the game of Rugby League, the greatest game of all.

Training Grounds season 2020

The training grounds at Woollahra are at the end of Marion Rd, Rose Bay, which is off New South Head Rd opposite the Rose Bay Ferry terminal. There's a small car park at the end adjacent to the playing fields. MAP HERE

Current Lay of the Land

Fellow Colts,

I thought it a pertinent time to let you all know the current lay of the land regarding playing Junior Rugby League this year.

The Paddington Colts have been at the forefront of negotiations with the Roosters Junior League President regarding the safeguards and guidelines that would be required in this environment. These are to allow us to the best job possible to ensure the safety of all Colts should the season restart.



We have been told that these requests will be answered on 1 June when the NSWRL guidelines are handed down for the start of play.

We have no idea how onerous these guidelines will be and how difficult they may be to implement but we will know in a week or so.

My opinion, from discussions I have had and only an opinion at this stage is the competition will go ahead in a six or seven-week format after a couple of weeks training beginning 1 July and six rounds and a final for 1 and 2 and games for 3, 4, 5, and 6 on Finals day.

There will be strict social distancing for spectators, strict cleanliness and sanitising requirements before and after games.

I have also formally requested through the Roosters Junior League President that the transfer rules be relaxed this year. So anyone wishing to play will be able to get a game. Teams with only 6 or 7 players are not lost to the code.

As soon as I get the guidelines next week, I will discuss with the Colts Executives and we will send you more solid information.

For us to be ready, all coaches / managers, please ensure that you have registered and are ready to go.

The club is well blessed for playmakers and if it had money to spend would do so in other areas.

The Roosters are set to unveil an 18-year-old hit man named after the great Gorden Tallis when footy gets again.

Tallis Duncan has become something of a favourite on Facebook videos, with a compilation of his big hits getting plenty of views. “My dad was a big fan of Gordie so that’s how I got my name”, the Clovelly Crocodiles and Paddington Colts local junior said.

A powerful lock or second-rower in the Roosters’s SG Ball team this season, Duncan is coming off contract at the end of the season and rival clubs are already knocking on his door.

COVID-19 Update: Plan to re-start Footy in July

As you know, last month it was decided by the New South Wales Rugby League, in partnership with the NRL and State governing bodies, to postpone community Rugby League and other Rugby League competitions and activities in Australia until at least the first weekend of May.

This decision was informed by advice provided by government and health organisations with a view to stopping the spread of COVID-19 virus.

Since this decision was made NSWRL has continued to review the advice provided by the State Government and Health organisations where COVID–19 updates are provided.

Guided by the latest advice, the Board of NSWRL today (22 April 2020) established a plan for a re-start of Rugby League activities from July 2020 to coincide with a common return date for some other winter sports across the state and the commencement of Term 3 in the school year.

The decision to kick-off a shortened Community Rugby League season and to re-start other abbreviated senior competitions will be further reviewed and confirmed by 1 June 2020 subject to the existing Government advice available at the time.

The decision took into consideration the NSW Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order 2020 which is currently preventing sport from being conducted and expires at midnight on 29 June 2020 (unless further extended).

Accordingly, the earliest possible return date is 30 June 2020, unless the NSW Government decides to lift the Public Health order earlier.

In line with most NSW winter sports, the NSWRL Board has agreed to kick-off Community Football competitions from 18 July 2020, coinciding with the end of the next school holiday period and start of Term 3, while allowing a return to training on 1 July 2020. This is subject to the status of the public health in the interim.

Competition formats and the length of the season will be dealt with on a case by case basis accordingly to the particular circumstances of each competition.

The 2020 season was originally due to commence 4 April when it was postponed in March. All Clubs and Leagues are encouraged to continue to take registrations beyond the traditional 30 June registration cut-off date.

The Board and Management of NSWRL have been continuing to closely monitor developments with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to strictly follow the Government advice so that we will only return to playing footy when it is deemed safe to do so.

Review Date Given the current unpredictable nature of the world we are living in NSWRL will continue to keep all stakeholders as informed as possible over coming weeks should there be significant changes to any of the above. There will also be a formal update provided by Monday 1 June 2020.

NSWRL and all of us in our Rugby League community will need to be responsive to the continual changes to the government advice around risks to public health, and should it become apparent that a July date may not be feasible, adjust and reassess at that time.

Dear Members,

The NSW Junior League Association (JLA) continues to monitor Coronavirus/Covid-19 and the impact that it may have on our members as they participate in their current trials and the impending 2020 Rugby League season.

I’d like to reassure all of our clubs that the NSWRL are working closely with the NRL and the relevant Government Departments in order to ensure that you have the most up to date advice.

Currently there is no change to our planned calendar of events or the start of the season. However this is currently a very fluid situation and the effects of Coronavirus/Covid-19 may have an impact on the capacity to conduct training and games over the coming weeks.

Either the JLA or the NSWRL will seek to communicate with all of you as soon as we become aware of any changes that may need to be made to any training sessions or games.

We ask all players, coaches, parents and friends to not attend training or games if you exhibit flu-like symptoms. It is best, in the current environment, to seek medical advice if you are displaying any of these symptoms. 

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates where relevant, based on the expert advice of The Australian Government Department of Health.

Sydney Roosters Junior League promotion 2020

Vale Marika Komainolovo

Our club is Saddened by the passing of a beautiful human, great footballer, proud Fijian and dear friend Marika Karamanalovo.

In our lives we meet people who give us energy and Marika gave you everything.

His beautiful smile, generous spirit and selfless attitude quickly earned the respect of his new team, his new friends and his new club in 2018 The mighty Paddington Colts. 

Marika played in our A grade with the passion of a young kid.

He loved the game of Rugby League the people and everything about it.

We made an assumption we were helping and teaching Marika when he came from Fiji to play with the Paddington Colts but little did we know he was teaching us the whole time. 

Marika never missed a training, never missed a game always asked what else’s he could do.

Coach Joel Greig, a mentor to Marika had to break his heart in our last game telling him the season only plays over winter to which Marika’s reply was “then we can start our off season next week.”

Men like Marika are not common.

He had a smile that could light up a training paddock at night, an energy that made you want to play. 

He had a passion that reminded you of the pure joy of the greatest game of all and a fierce loyalty that forged life long memories, friendships and unbreakable bonds.

At season 2018’s end Marika was diagnosed with brain,Liver and testicular cancer. He had successful surgery and was on the road toward recovery the target being remission. 

As the Colts Family does we held a successful fundraiser to give assistance to Marika which he loved and he knew that he had a family at the Colts.

Coach Joel Greig continued to support Marika in his journey to recovery often reminding him the closest he could get to the field in season 2019 is running the water, and he never missed a game. 

In 2020 Marika was sadly given a terminal diagnosis as his cancers had become ferocious. 

Continuing to support him Coach Joel Greig rallied our Colts family  and Marika was overwhelmed again with the support and love of his club & team mates. 

In Hospital Marika was overwhelmed by the support of his team mates in particular two of his favourites Jamie Hardaker and Mike Coleman.

Marika made a prediction fellow team mate & proud Colt Mike Coleman will play 1st grade in 3 years we agree. 

Lastly and sadly as it was time to say good bye, Coach Joel Greig

Said it was the most beautiful and saddest hug of his life and they both cried a bucket. 

Joel asked his last question to his beautiful friend “Marika is there anything you didn’t do that you wanted to.”

Marika’s reply “ Joel I grew up in Fiji loving Rugby League it was my dream to play in Australia.

You and the Paddington Colts helped me live that dream I’m happy.

Marika was so sick he was not supposed to fly to his homeland the beautiful Fiji 

Joel along with a medical team and a team at Qantas got Marika back to his village and family on Monday 27th of January wearing his Paddington Colts singlet.

Sadly today we learnt our Fijian brother and Paddington Colt family member passed away peacefully with his family around him in his beautiful Fijian village.

Thank you Marika for teaching us about how beautiful human beings can be. 

Thanks for gifting us with your presence and energy. 

Thanks for making our team and our club  “Colture” better because you were part of it. 

Thanks for allowing us to see the man, the leader, the love, the compassion and the strength that is Joel Greig our great friend and coach. 

Rest In Peace our beautiful Paddington Colts family Member.  

We will honour you with Arm

Bands in our first game and we will immortalise you’re memory through the club awards.
